The heat of summer can be notoriously rough on your garden. Has your garden seen better days? If your outdoor paradise is starting to look a little haggard, consider these tips and tricks for maintaining a beautiful and happy summer garden.
Tip 1: Water Plants Thoroughly
This may seem like a given, but be wise with your water. Keep your garden beds cool and moist by adding mulch around the base of your herbs and flowers. Water your plants thoroughly to promote deep drought and pest resistant roots. Between waterings, wait until the top several inches of soil are crumbly and moist before watering again. Avoiding light, frequent watering is your best bet, as this type of watering encourages shallow roots, which are less tolerant to the heat and more susceptible to insect problems.
Tip 2: Cut Back Your Perennials
Cutting back your blooming perennials will stimulate new growth. We recommend cutting them back by about half. This will create a new flush of blossoming flowers in the fall. This is also a good time to cut back on your perennials to help clean up the overgrown look of your summer flower beds.
Tip 3: Mow Your Lawn High
Taller grass produces a deep root that is more drought tolerant. Yet again, these deep roots allow your grass to be more resistant to insects, disease, and environmental stresses. Remove less than one-third of the total leaf surface of your grass. After mowing, leave the grass clippings on your lawn to allow your soil to soak up all the healthy nitrogen and organic matter that it desperately needs.
Tip 4: Address Any Pest Problems, But Keep The Pollinators Happy
If you have a pest problem, address it as soon as possible. You can use pest control dust that is available or seek out an organic alternative. On the other hand, you want to keep pollinators in your garden happy. Insects, hummingbirds, and bees play a big part in creating a healthy vegetable garden. Incorporate native plants and flowers to help attract these helpful bugs into your garden.
Tip 5: Enjoy The Summer Days
It is summer, after all, so don’t forget to kick back and relax. Enjoy your beautiful garden and the fruits of your labor. Maybe while you’re relaxing in your garden, you might start planning your fall and winter garden, or start sourcing seeds for next planting season.
